Music

 Meet Mrs. Johnson

TGS General Music, Band, Chorus 5-7

Owls Head School General Music, Band 3-5

 Tell us about yourself:

I graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a BS in Music Education in 1983. My first teaching job was in Sanford Maine teaching instrumental music 5-12. In 1989, I was hired to teach instrumental music in SAD #50. Since 2000, I have taught General Music, Chorus and Band at TGS for grades 5-8. I am happy to say I am still teaching music at TGS (5-7) for the newly formed RSU #13 and excited to add grades 3-4 this year at the Owls Head Central School! I love to sing, play the piano, guitar, clarinet and many other instruments too!

Why do you like to teach music?

Everyone enjoys music whether it be listening, dancing, singing or playing an instrument. There is nothing like seeing a fifth grader smile when they hold their band instrument for the first time, or the look on a young singers face when they are singing a song they love.   I feel fortunate to be able to share my talents and gifts with kids and hope I inspire them to develop their own creative abilities.  Music is a life long skill and meant to be shared. What better way to accomplish that than to teach it!

What are your favorite student units?

I enjoy every aspect of my teaching whether it is teaching a child how to read music, sing, play an instrument, compose a song or express their emotions through music.

What is your parent contact plan?

Parents are encouraged to contact me anytime they desire. I am best reached through e-mail ajohnson@rsu13.org or call the school. Throughout the year, I will keep parents informed by: sending home parent letters, articles in the newsletters etc. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

What are your homework guidelines?

Since all general music classes meet once a week, we do all of our work through in class assignments. Grades are entered weekly for TGS students 5-7 on infinite campus for all of my music classes (music, band, chorus).   Students that play a band instrument (grade 5) or recorder (4th graders at OHCS) should be practicing weekly and recording their times on their practice chart
