Tell us about yourself
It’s hard for me to believe it, but this year marks my 34th year in education. For 19 years, I was an elementary and middle school teacher in Maine (Lubec, Hermon, and Thomaston) and Illinois (Danville). Presently, I am going into my 15th year as the school counselor at TGS and second year at OHCS. My educational background includes a BS and M.Ed. from the University of Maine at Orono.
In addition to teaching, I have had several interesting opportunities to work with kids during the summer. They include being director of Lubec’s Summer Recreation Program for several years, serving as a teacher at College for Kids at Danville Community College in Illinois for a summer, and six years as director of Cushing Science Camps for Girls and Boys.
In recent years, I have spent my summers enjoying outings with my two grandsons and tending my flower gardens and the perennial plant business that my husband, Jon, and I started, called Perennial Favorites.
Why do you like teaching/counseling?
When I was a classroom teacher, my favorite subject to teach was science. I especially enjoyed sharing my love of nature with students. At TGS, I have enjoyed the opportunity to help the 5th graders learn about growing produce and flowers in their Common Ground Garden. As you can tell from my picture, we grew some pretty impressive produce this year that we donated to our school lunch program.
As a counselor, I enjoy helping students develop their interpersonal skills, set goals for themselves, and strategize how to overcome the many challenges they may face. I do this through guidance classes, small group work, and individual counseling.
