Covering and Surrounding

In this unit students will learn mathematical ideas and techniques that can help answer questions about size.  In Covering and Surrounding students will explore areas and perimeters of figures, including quadrilaterals, triangles, and circles.

            Students will learn how to

                        Relate area to covering a figure

                        Relate perimeter to surrounding a figure

                        Analyze what it means to measure area and perimeter

                        Develop strategies for finding areas and perimeters of rectangular and

                        Non-rectangular shapes.

                        Analyze how the area of a triangle and area of a parallelogram are related      

                        To the area of a rectangle

                        Develop formulas and procedures for finding areas

                        and perimeters of

                        Rectangles, parallelograms, triangles, and circles
